BOAH Names New Meat and Poultry Director

[September 09, 2007]

INDIANAPOLIS (7 September 2007)¯Indiana State Veterinarian Bret D. Marsh, DVM, announced today the appointment of James R. Scott, DVM as Director of the Meat and Poultry Inspection Division of the Indiana State Board of Animal Health (BOAH).

“We are thrilled to have Dr. Scott as director of Meat and Poultry Inspection,” said Dr. Marsh. “As assistant director for four years, Dr. Scott knows the ins and outs of meat and poultry inspection and will provide experienced leadership for the division.”

Dr. Scott assumes the role on Sept. 10, 2007, replacing Paul Dieterlen, DVM, who is retiring after 16 years with the program.

A 1968 Purdue School of Veterinary Medicine graduate, Scott worked in private veterinary practice for 35 years before joining the BOAH team. Scott also served eight years on the Indiana Veterinary Medical Exam Board and as the 1997 President of the Indiana Veterinary Medical Association.

The State Board of Animal Health Meat and Poultry Inspection Division is the regulatory agency that licenses and inspects meat and poultry processing facilities statewide. State-inspected processing facilities slaughter nearly 100,000 animals per year, including cattle, hogs, poultry, deer, elk, bison, ostrich and emus, at 94 state-inspected and 30 custom-exempt plants across Indiana. Demand for BOAH inspections has increased as demand for “farm fresh” products have increased.
